The Kvarken Archipelago World Heritage Site The unique Kvarken Archipelago is Finland's only Natural World Heritage Site on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is the best place in the world to experience and understand the land uplift phenomenon caused by the last Ice Age.
Terranova. Terranova presents nature in the Kvarken and Vaasa region from the Ice Age until the present day. Visitors can wonder at the land uplift phenomenon and its consequences, admire the beautiful Kvarken Archipelago and its fauna with all their senses. They can pat a ringed seal or touch rock that is billions of years old, dive beneath the surface in a virtual aquarium and watch nature films in the auditorium.
Ojberget. Öjberget is located approximately 10 kilometers south of the city centre, in Sundom. It is part of a high forest ridge surrounded by vast farmlands. The downhill skiing slope and trails are in frequent use during the winter, which transform into hiking or jogging trails during the summer. An observation tower is located at the top and along the hiking trail is the only stone-age archeological find in the region.
Vaasan Pingviinit. Take a super hot sauna and bath in the frozen Gulf of Bothnia (Baltic sea) with the local "penguins" who do this every day. The Gulf of Bothnia is the northernmost part of the Baltic Sea. The sea is located between the west coast of Finland and the east coast of Sweden. In the south of the gulf lie the archipelago of Åland and the Åland Sea. There is a narrowing in the middle; this is called 'Kvarken'.
Sauna. Be sure to try a traditional Finnish sauna. Almost every family owns some kind of a sauna.
